When I’m at the gym or walking in the park I love listening to podcasts. It helps ease the boredom of repetitive exercise while nourishing the mind and soul. One of my favourite podcasts is The Introvert Entrepreneur.
The Introvert Entrepreneur Podcast
The Introvert Entrepreneur is the brainchild of life coach Beth Buelow who is an introvert herself. What I love about this podcast, apart from Beth’s lovely soothing voice, is the fact that everyone she interviews on her show is also an introvert and a successful entrepreneur or small business owner. And in spite of being introverts, each of the interviewees has learned how to play to their strengths and nurture their introvert selves. It’s been very inspiring listening.
I’ve always known that I’m an introvert and often wished I wasn’t. At the back of my mind I’ve held the belief that if I was an extrovert life would so much simpler. And easier.
With about 50% of the population being introvert, it seems a ridiculous thing to be ashamed of. And yet, despite only 50% of the population being extrovert, there does seem to be this unwritten rule in our society that says if you want to be liked, if you want to succeed, you need to be an extrovert.
Advantages of Being an Introvert
An article on Forbes.com entitled Why Introverts Can Make the Best Leaders points out how introversion traits like listening, thinking first, preferring the written word to verbal discourse are actually hidden strengths and can be used for success.
I do think the tide is turning and more people are becoming aware of the advantages and strengths of being an introvert. Just recently a lot of publicity was given to the publication of Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking. I have begun to feel proud of being an introvert and the more I listen to and read about other introverts, the more I understand how to nurture my introversion and play to my strengths.
The Introvert Entrepreneur podcast has really helped me on my journey to self-knowledge and acceptance. Give it a listen and I hope it inspires you too.
